Our history
The roots of the current firm run through two related New Haven lawyers: Herbert L. Batt and his first cousin Murray Trachten. Their work preceded the real estate and land use practice Benjamin Trachten leads today.
Herbert Batt was admitted to the Connecticut bar in 1935. His practice was based at 109 Church Street in downtown New Haven.
Herbert Batt helped establish the Westville Synagogue, one example of the family’s civic ties to New Haven.
Herbert Batt’s first cousin Murray Trachten established the predecessor to today’s firm in 1964. He retired in 2019 after more than five decades in practice.
Ben carries the family tradition forward with a practice centered on real estate, development, zoning, and land use. His work brings together transactional counsel and experience with local approval processes.
Ben has served on, and chaired, the New Haven Board of Zoning Appeals. That perspective informs his work with applicants, property owners, nonprofits, and developers navigating municipal decisions.
The firm is also supported by experienced paralegals and staff who help clients keep matters moving from the first call through closing or approval.
